How to Set Up EMail on your iPhone

1 Open/unlock your iPhone to reveal the home screen showing a collection of icons.
2 Select the settings icon
3 Select the Mail, Contacts, Calendars option (you may need to scroll down to see this option)
4 Select Add Account..
5 Select other from the account types screen.
6 Select Add Mail Account
7 Enter your name, Email address & password as appropriate and click NEXT.
8 You then need to add the mail servers
9 Click on the POP button at the top of the screen.
10 Under Incoming Mail Server:
  • Enter the Host Name as mail.somedomain.ie
  • Enter the username as: somebody@somedomain.ie
  • Enter your email password
11 Under outgoing mail server, enter mail.vodafone.ie if using a Vodafone account.
12 Click Save. Your phone will now attempt to verify the settings, if you receive a message saying “cannot connect using SSL” click yes to create the account without SSL. Your phone will again attempt to verify the settings which may take some time and you may have to click yes more than once. I had to click yes several times before my phone would properly accept the settings.
13 You then need to set your phone to fetch the emails.
14 From the Mail, Contacts Calendar screen, you should see an option – Fetch New Data, this should be set to push, click the arrow beside push and ensure push is on and click on “Every 15 minutes”. This will set you phone to automatically check for email every 15 minutes.
15 Your email should now be set up and a new icon should now appear on your home screen.
16 Turn off your iPhone and restart the iPhone – click on the mail icon on your desktop. If everything has been set up correctly, then mail should appear in your inbox.
17 I suggest you immediately create a test message and send it back to your email address to ensure you have the correct outgoing mail server entered. If the message successfully sends it should also come back into your inbox – although this can take several minutes to round trip.

In order to receive email on your iPhone you have to have a data option enabled on your mobile phone account. Contact your service provider

Troubleshooting

If you experience problems receiving mail you should re-check the settings. A common mistake is to add the incoming mail server as mail@mydomain.ie instead of mail.mydomain.ie If you are able to receive email and experience problems sending emails from your iPhone you should ensure you have set the correct outgoing mail server (provided by your service provider).
